Skate Canada PEI Basic Level Technical Official (BLTO) Clinic

    - Foundation Steps for Technical Officials

Schedule:

  • Saturday, November 9: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Sunday, November 10: 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon  

Fee:

  • Free for PEI participants
  • $50 for participants from other provinces  

 Join us for an insightful clinic designed for aspiring technical officials. This clinic, led by esteemed professionals Laurene Collin-Knoblauch and Sheila Beard, is aimed at enhancing the skills and understanding necessary for technical officials in figure skating. Laurene is an ISU Technical Controller and Technical Specialist in Pairs and an International Technical Specialist in Singles. Sheila is a Sectional Technical Controller in Singles and a Challenge Level Judge in Singles.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a current Skate Canada registrant with a Skate Canada Club
  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Any two STAR 5 Free Skate, Skills, or Dance assessments
    OR
  • Any one STAR 6 or higher Free Skate, Skills, or Dance assessment

Online Course Information: 

Participants will be required to complete the BLTO Pre-course Training on Skate Canada’s eLearning site. Participants can access the eLearning content before the course start date (approximately 2 weeks). Please note that the eLearning training must be completed prior to the start of the course and may take up to 6-8 hours to complete. Therefore, participants should plan accordingly to ensure the content is completed. This training will include the following: 

  • An overview of the BLTO pathway
  • How to Organize Yourself as an Official
  • The Technical Panel Process
  • Shorthand and Effective Notetaking
  • Technical Rules
  • Program Requirements

Meet your Facilitators:



Sheila Beard is a Sectional Technical Controller in Singles, and a Challenge Level Judge in Singles. Sheila also serves as the Officials, Judges, Evaluators and Technical Committee Chair.

Laurene Collin-Knoblauch is an ISU Technical Controller and Technical Specialist in Pairs, and an International Technical Specialist in Singles.

 

 

Skate Canada PEI Summer Workshop

    - Enhancing Coaching Strategies - Heather McMahon Session

Join us for an intensive workshop aimed at enhancing coaching strategies for CanSkate and STAR 1-5 levels. This workshop will cover delivery standards, coaching strategies, and practical tips for improving athlete development.

Moderator Profile:

Heather McMahon holds the position of Senior Manager for Skating Programs at Skate Canada, where her extensive knowledge and vast experience are instrumental. Heather's involvement with the national service center staff spans 15 years, during which time she has assumed numerous roles, ranging from administrative tasks to her current managerial position.

One of Heather's noteworthy achievements is her significant contribution to the team that developed the current CanSkate, PowerSkate, and STAR 1-5 programs. She also played an integral role in the creation of the STAR 1-Gold assessment structure. The team's current focus is on creating and expanding opportunities for Adult and Adaptive participants, a project Heather is passionately involved in.

Heather's competencies extend beyond management; she is a learning facilitator and coach evaluator for both CanSkate coach and Regional coach levels within the NCCP. In addition, she maintains a hands-on approach as an NCCP National level coach. With an impressive coaching career that has lasted over three decades, Heather's dedication to the sport is unquestionable.

 

 

Skate Canada PEI Coach Seminar for CanSkate + Regional & PowerSkate

Skate PEI is thrilled to announce our upcoming CanSkate, Regional (updated on April 24, 2024), and PowerSkate Coach Courses, designed to empower aspiring coaches and enhance their skills in teaching skating fundamentals.

Meet Mark Lauzon, your facilitator:
Mark is the coaching development coordinator (STAR Pathway) for Skate Canada.  He is proud to have been a member of the refresh of the CanSkate and Regional Coach Courses. He is a coach developer for CanSkate, Regional and PowerSkate coaching level. He was an integral resource in the refresh of CanSkate and STAR 1-5 programs. Mark is a passionate coach and coaches CanSkate, PowerSkate and the STAR program weekly. 

CanSkate Coach Course:
Join us for our CanSkate Coach Course from Monday, April 29, to Thursday, May 2. Delve into the fundamentals of teaching the CanSkate Program, and kickstart your coaching journey. By the end of this course, you'll earn a CanSkate Coach In Training status, laying the foundation for future coaching endeavors. Led by Mark, who played a pivotal role in refreshing and maintaining the CanSkate Coach Course, you'll gain insights from a seasoned coach and educator.

Gain insights into the Regional Coach program during the CanSkate course. This hybrid format provides an enriched learning experience by integrating Regional Coach content, focusing on developing skaters at the Learn to Train stage, particularly within the STAR 1-5 program.

PowerSkate Coach Course:
Ready to take your coaching skills to the next level? Enroll in our PowerSkate Coach Course on Friday, May 3, and Sunday, May 5. Designed to prepare coaches to develop hockey and ringette players at the Learn to Train stage, this course is your gateway to coaching excellence. Led by Mark and supported by our dedicated team, you'll explore advanced delivery techniques and customize your approach to power skating instruction.

Eligibility Requirements:

CanSkate Coach Course

  • Be a current Skate Canada registrant with a Skate Canada Club.
  • Minimum 15 years of age.
  • Have passed at least one complete STAR 5 Assessment.
  • Optional Video Submission: Candidates who did not pass the STAR 5 Assessment yet, have the option to demonstrate their skating abilities required for STAR 5 by uploading a video. Alternatively, candidates who do not submit a video in advance can provide proof of their skating ability during the course.

 

Regional Coach Course

  • Be a current Skate Canada registrant with a Skate Canada Club or a registered Coach in good standing.
  • Has passed one complete Star 6 assessment or Star 5 Freeskate assessment plus one additional Star 5 assessment.
  • Required to complete eLearning training including Part A – Coaching Foundations, Part B – CanSkate Foundations, and Part C – Regional Foundations.
  • Attend an in-person two-day CanSkate course.

 

PowerSkate Coach Course

  • Be a current Skate Canada registrant with a Skate Canada Club or a registered Coach in good standing.
  • Be minimum 15 years of age.
  • Have a Skate Canada CanSkate Coach, Hockey Canada, or Ringette Canada NCCP Status.
  • If you are eligible for the CanSkate Coach Course mentioned above and successfully certified during the Monday to Thursday CanSkate Coach Course, you are automatically eligible for enrollment in this PowerSkate Coach Course.

 Skate Canada PEI is thrilled to announce our upcoming Provincial Coaches' Seminar from August 4-6, 2023. Best of all, participation in this invaluable three-day event is absolutely free of charge. This is a wonderful opportunity for professional development, networking, and collaborative learning within our figure skating community.

We are privileged to have Heather McMahon, a highly respected expert from Skate Canada, leading the seminar. Drawing from her expansive knowledge and experience, Heather will cover an extensive range of crucial topics, making this event an invaluable learning experience for both new and seasoned coaches.

Our seminar is open to all members of Skate Canada, including coaches, skaters, volunteers, club managers, and staff. We also warmly welcome skaters' parents for an informative session designed to help them understand more about the sport their children love. Registered coaches attending the seminar will receive Skate Canada Professional Development Points (PDPs).

Meet Our Expert: Josée Bourdon
 
 
Josée brings an astounding 25 years of experience at Skate Canada, overseeing all aspects of coaching for the organization, including the Long-Term Development project. Her expertise includes:
  • Developing and implementing the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
  • Leading the National Mentorship Program
  • Managing all Coach Apprenticeship Programs
  • Facilitating seminars for South American coaches in Brazil
  • Guiding the Brazilian Ice Sports Federation in coaching education
  • Advising Skate Sweden and the South Africa Figure Skating Association
  • Contributing to the International Skating Union (ISU)'s Worldwide Coach Education Framework
  • Being selected for Canada Leads, a flagship leadership program

What is the LTD Education and Safe Sport Roadshow?
 
The Roadshow is a dynamic event designed to inform and inspire our committed coaches, clubs, and the public about the latest developments in Long-Term Development and Safe Sport practices. It provides all attendees with important insights into the new guidelines, methodologies, and techniques that can enhance the overall development of skating in Canada.
 
What will the Roadshow cover?
 
The event will feature updates on NCCP changes and plans for the upcoming season, as well as numerous essential topics related to Long-Term Development (LTD) and Safe Sport. This is an open platform where everyone will have the opportunity to interact, engage, and collaborate, fostering a community of learning and growth.
 
Where and when will the Roadshow take place?
 
The roadshow will take place on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, from 4 pm to 9 pm at the Eliyahu Wellness Centre at Canada Games Place in North Rustico, PEI. The evening slot is designed to accommodate a higher participation rate.

The Roadshow is open to everyone! Whether you're a Skate Canada coach, a part of a skating club, a skating enthusiast, or just a community member interested in the development and safety of sports, we welcome you with open arms.
