The PowerSkate Coach Program prepares coaches to develop hockey and ringette players at the Learn to Train stage of LTD. The program serves as a transition out of CanSkate, to further develop sport-specific skating skills. Coaches going through the PowerSkate pathway will explore the delivery of the program and can utilize what they have learned to customize an advanced delivery of power skating. PowerSkate Coaches are qualified to coach the PowerSkate program.
Certification Deadline
Coaches have three years from the date of the in-training course to become Certified PowerSkate Coach.
Pre-Requisites
- Be a current Skate Canada registrant with a Skate Canada Club or a registered Coach in good standing.
- Be minimum 15 years of age.
- Has a Skate Canada CanSkate Coach, Hockey Canada, or Ringette Canada NCCP Status.
- Has completed the following Skate Canada eLearning training:
- Part A – Coaching Foundations eLearning course
In-Training status
- Attend the two-day course

Trained status
PowerSkate coaches will earn a Trained status once they have completed the two-day coach course, have completed these three multi-sport courses and Locker eLearning:
- Making Ethical Decisions (multi-sport course)
- Teaching and Learning (multi-sport course)
- Planning a Practice (multi-sport course)

Certified status
- Must be a registered Skate Canada Coach, in good standing
- Successfully complete the PowerSkate Coach Certified Evaluation Portfolio (Locker)
The PowerSkate Coach Certified Evaluation Portfolio provides a platform for coaches to display their competency of coaching on a PowerSkate session. To assist with coach development, the portfolio consists of the following components:
- Coach philosophy
- Coaching goals
- Puck/ring philosophy
- Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- Submission of one 10-minute lesson
- Warm-up, development time, cool down plan
- Completion of the Making Ethical Decisions online evaluation
Becoming a Certified PowerSkate Coach
- When ready to complete the certification process, Coaches must enroll in PowerSkate Coach Certified Evaluation Portfolio through the eLearning site.
- You will be prompted to pay a $105 evaluation fee prior to entry. Please note, this fee is non-refundable. Coaches should enroll in this course only when they are prepared to finish the portfolio in a timely manner.
Upon enrollment, the following events will take place:
- The coach will be assigned a coach evaluator by Skate Canada
- The coach evaluator will set up a time with the coach to review the portfolio (pre-brief conversation)
- The coach will complete the portfolio requirements and notify the evaluator
- Ensure portfolio is in fillable Portfolio Template
- Submit for marking
- The coach evaluator will review the portfolio
- Please allow four weeks for marking
- The coach evaluator will schedule a time with the coach to review the portfolio as well as create an action plan (debrief). The action plan may include additional professional development activities such as eLearning, resubmission of lessons, mentor coach lessons, etc.
