National Coach Pathway

 

The National Coach Program is designed for coaches working with Train to Compete athletes who will acquire the necessary skill set to improve athlete performance in preparation for provincial, national, and in some cases international competitions.

 

Pre-Requisites

  • Must be a certified Provincial Coach status
  • Must be either a registered Skate Canada coach in good standing

In-Training Status

  • Attend Analyze Technical and Tactical Performance (ATTP) course either virtually or in-person
  • Complete ATTP workbook successfully

In a multi-skating discipline environment, the ATTP 2-day course prepares coaches to refine advanced figure skating skills and strategize plans for helping their athletes reach their full potential. At the ATTP course, coaches will analyze technical skills at the junior or senior competitive levels. Based on the following learning objectives, the ATTP course will prepare coaches to:

  • Analyze technical and tactical performance by observing and defining key factors that influence competitive performance
  • Analyze technical and tactical performance by applying the principles of motion to detect and correct key performance factors
  • Identify strategies to monitor and evaluate the technical and tactical performance
  • Implement and assess the effectiveness of corrections

Course Information

  • Suggested course fee: $250

Trained Status

National Coaches will earn a Trained status once they have completed the following multi-sport courses:

  • Leading a Drug-free sport (multi-sport course)
  • Managing Conflict (multi-sport course)
  • Coaching and Leading Effectively (multi-sport course)
  • Developing Athletic Abilities (multi-sport course)
  • Prevention and Recovery (multi-sport course)
  • Psychology of Performance (multi-sport course) 
  • Advanced Practice Planning (multi-sport course)
  • Manage A Sport Program (multi-sport course)
  • Performance Planning (multi-sport course - completed at Provincial)

Depending on the module, multi-sport training may be done in-person, online, or by correspondence. Please inquire with the PTCR in your area. 

Certified Status

  • Must be a registered Skate Canada coach in good standing

The National Coach Certified Evaluation Portfolio provides a platform for coaches to show their ability to coach Train to Compete figure skaters. Coaches are required to work with Junior to Senior podium pathway athletes in at least one skating discipline – singles, ice dance, pair skating, or synchronized skating. National Coach evaluation done with the same Junior or Senior athlete/team is mandatory and is broken down into three parts; Part 1 – Coach Portfolio, Part 2 – Observation of a training session at your club or skating school and Part 3 Observation of a competition with a Junior or Senior level podium pathway athlete. The level of skater/athlete and the skills required to achieve the National Coach certification standard must be demonstrated at the LTD Train to Compete (Junior) or Train to Win (Senior) stages of development..

Part 1: Coaching Portfolio

Upon enrollment, the following events will take place:

  • The coach will be assigned a coach evaluator by Skate Canada
  • The coach evaluator will set up a time with the coach to review the portfolio (pre-brief conversation), set up at time for the Observation training session and/or Observation of a competition.
  • The coach will complete the portfolio requirements and notify the evaluator
    • Ensure portfolio is in fillable Portfolio Template
    • Submit for marking 
  • The coach evaluator will review the portfolio
    • Please allow four weeks for marking
  • The coach evaluator will schedule a time with the coach to review the portfolio as well as create an action plan (debrief). The action plan may include additional professional development activities such as eLearning, resubmission of lessons, mentor coach lessons, etc.

The National Coach Portfolio includes:

  • Coaching philosophy
  • Competition plan
  • Athlete tracking and monitoring
  • Program management and communication tools
  • Three online multi-sport evaluations
    • NCCP Competition-Development: Making Ethical Decisions (MED)
    • NCCP Competition-Development: Managing Conflict
    • NCCP Competition-Development: Leading Drug-Free Sport

Part 2: Observation of a training session at your club or skating school

Upon enrollment, the following events will take place:

  • The coach will be assigned a coach evaluator by Skate Canada
  • The coach evaluator will set up a time with the coach to review the Observation training session (pre-brief conversation)
  • 1-hour observation to be scheduled
  • Debrief post observation

The purpose of this observation is to evaluate the skills to manage an athlete in a training environment.

Part 3: Observation of a competition with a Junior or Senior level competitive athlete.

Upon enrollment, the following events will take place:

  • The coach will be assigned a coach evaluator by Skate Canada
  • The coach evaluator will set up a time with the coach to review the Observation of a competition (pre-brief conversation)
  • Observation of a competitive event at the Junior or Senior level
  • Debrief post event

Becoming a Certified National Coach

  • When ready to complete the certification process, Coaches must enroll in National Coach Certified Evaluation Portfolio through the eLearning site.
    • National Coach portfolio evaluation: $100
    • National Coach training session observation: $200
    • National Coach competition observation: $200
    • Re-evaluation/observation fees may be applicable based on the areas identified as future strengths
